Notes
-Named for the reign of Queen Victoria - It was a period of great scientific discovery- Charles Darwin published his theories on evolution in On the Origin of the Species (1859). It challenged the beliefs of what was currently accepted as the origin of man. -Compulsory education laws were enacted- Children must be educated until they reach a certain age. As a result, children's literature became very popular. Characteristics:

Ebenezer Scrooge- a miserly, money-hungry businessman
Fred- Scrooge's only nephew who tries to forge a relationship with him
Jacob Marley- Scrooge's now deceased, equally greedy partner condemned to wander the world as a ghost with heavy chains; hopes to save Scrooge from his fate
Bob Cratchit- Scrooge's clerk; a kind and very poor man trying to take care of his large family
Fezziwig- Scrooge's jovial, party-loving former employer
Belle- Scrooge's fiance who breaks off their engagement after Scrooge becomes consumed with greed
Tiny Tim- Cratchit's young son, crippled from birth
3 Ghosts- visit Scrooge in one night to show him his past, present, and future (if he does not change his ways)
